LIFE COACHING FOR BUSY PEOPLE- AVOIDING COLLEGE KIDS DORM DISASTERS

IF you have had your 2nd visit to your child's dorm room you may not have liked what you saw.  Here's a few THROW BACK THURSDAY tips from my CBS THE EARLY SHOW SEGMENT.

Back To School - Avoiding Dorm Disasters
Some Tips To Help Your College Kids Keep Their Rooms Clean
http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3158649n

 (AP)
(CBS) Whether your college-bound teen will be living in a dorm for the first time, or returning to school, there are ways to help them keep their rooms clean without your constant reminders.

Laura Dellutri, known as the "Healthy Housekeeper" and author of the book "White Couch, With Kids!?" is a frequent visitor to the Saturday Early Show. She offers a crash course on ways to keep dorm rooms clean and organized.

Here is her advice:

Utilize The Small Space To Their Advantage:
No matter where your child goes to school, it seems like there's never enough closet, drawer, or storage space, and that leads to clutter! Put and end that problem with an over-the-door closet organizer; they can use it to store everything, from paper to food to cleaning supplies. It takes up a lot less space, and looks a lot nicer, than those plastic milk crates every college student seems to own.

Make Laundry Less Painful
Let's face it: most college kids don't like doing laundry. So, they often let it pile up all over their room until they run out of clothes, or until they can bring it home (so their parents can do it).

Put an end to that with the Tide Backpack Duffle Bag. It's an all-in-one storage unit/hamper and carry-all for dirty (and clean) laundry. They can even hang items like detergent and fabric softener sheets off the bag, so it's even easier to carry everything to the dorm's laundry room! And, you can even buy them smaller detergent bottles that offer two times the concentrated formula, so there's no need to lug around a huge bottle. Just be sure to encourage them to carry the bag to the laundry room, not back home!

Take The Ick Out Of Sharing A Shower And Bathroom:
Yuck! Many a student has complained about the dorm bathrooms ... especially the showers, floors, and fixtures. Not only can they be gross, but they can also be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Don't forget about those sloppy roommates who are always spilling things, and/or may have some nasty habits.

Disinfectant wipes are a quick, easy way to clean up these messes (and many others) without having to use a lot of elbow grease. Simply throw a container in your bathroom caddy. While you're at it, throw in a pair of flip flops, too.

Cook Something Without Having To Clean Anything:
Not every college-bound student knows how to cook. Even if they do, they probably aren't too keen on the cleanup it often entails (who is?). But, what if they get sick of the dining room fare or get hungry when it's closed (for instance, late at night)?

Well, there's a solution: a small electric grill that cooks frozen foods in minutes, and never needs to be cleaned (the food cooks in a disposable bag that catches all the grease)! It requires even less effort than that old college fave, the George Foreman Grill!

While we're on the subject, how about a portable refrigerator that can keep food cold and warm? It's a much better place than your closet or under your bed to store that leftover pizza.

Life Coaching for Busy People! WELCOME TO SPEED CLEANING MADE EASY!

10 FALL SPEED CLEANING TIPS

1. Get Organized. Use tools that will save you time and keep them in a bucket or basket.
As you go room to room take the basket with you to save time versus back tracking. I prefer
using extension dusters (no ladder) dusting cloths (no polish) disinfecting wipes (no water).

 2. Start at the top and work your way down.  The technique to Speed Cleaning is to have

a system. High dust, mid dust and low dust in that order.  Floors last.  Work the room in a circle
 and you
won't forget anything.

 3. Do one room at a time and complete it.  If you don't it's easy to get distracted and forget

where you left off.  If you jump from room to room at the end of the cleaning session you might
not have one fully cleaned room, and that would be discouraging.

 4. Don't Clean-Clean.  Most people spray glass cleaner all over their bathroom mirror and

the only place it is dirty is on the bottom!  Pro cleaners know a microfiber cloth used dry can lift
the dust off the top of the mirror.  Spray the mirror only where it is dirty and wipe clean.

 5. Spray Less Clean Less.   In America we think more of something is better.  NOT true

when it comes to cleaning your furniture, glass, or mirrors.  The more you spray the
more work you create for yourself.  Use tip #4 every time you clean.

 6. Don't do windows the old fashioned way.  Newspaper leaves ink residue, paper towels

leave lint behind--the best bet, microfiber cleaning cloths for small areas and a professional
window squeegee for windows. That is the best way to get a streak free shine or use a microfiber
 cloth.

7.  Stay away from Vinegar and Sponge mops. Vinegar can erode the finish on your

beautiful floors and sponge mops harbor bacteria and germs like no other! I prefer a
microfiber washable mop head.  It will clean better than a traditional mop and bucket.
Just place a clean pad on the mop head and mop the floor. I also like the Shark Sonic Duo
Scrubberfor floors.  It scrubs and cleans in 1/2 the time.

 8. Wood Surfaces. Use lemon oil on all those porous wood surfaces that have suffered

through the Summer's dry heat. Not only will the lemon oil treat the wood and restore the
moisture and shine to it, but it will cover most scratches from the pets or kids in the house
that have "knicked up" your oak baseboards.

9. Speed Dusting.  Stop overs spraying your furniture polish, spray your cloth only.

Over spraying wood surfaces causes gummy fingerprints and build-up attracting more dust.
Fall is the perfect time to have your duct work cleaned. That will not only improve your indoor
air quality, but it will help eliminate the dust that has settled in the vents and duct work.  It's also
wise to get thechimney swept for safety.

 10. Off with the Shoes! 85% of the dirt that comes into your home comes from the bottom

of shoes! No wonder those carpets always look so bad after the winter months! Call an
ICCRC Certified Cleaner to come and thoroughly clean your carpets, and be sure to reapply
carpet protector on the all carpeting.(Normal foot traffic and carpet cleaning removes the carpet
protector from the fibers over time.)

Home & Life Coaching for Busy People! DEALING WITH MEAN PEOPLE

Have you ever been minding your own business, going about your day and someone be it a store clerk, coworker or family member just says something really mean to you?  If so, you are not alone. Let's face it, no matter where you live, what you do for a living, or how kind hearted you are, Mean People are going to be mean to you!   It does get frustrating to deal with on a daily basis.

We have all heard nightly news television media stories about Cyber and Text Bullying, unfortunately there is also Adult Bullying and it doesn't make the news very often.  But it happens in homes and offices every day across America.  Adult Bullying is very real and at times painful.  How can you overcome mean insults, digs and actions without them having the power to steal your joy or put negativity in your day?

1.  Remember Hurting people Hurt people.  Most people are mean to others because they have no joy and want to put down or belittle others to make them feel better about themselves.  I have found mean people can be living with abuse, have dysfunctional lives, have a serious illness or they can even be bitter about lost love.  Their emotional well being is not your problem, but their problems typically are the root of the mean attitude they display to others.

2.  Be a Duck, Ducks Don't Talk, they Fly off.  Ducks have waterproof feathers so everything rolls off their backs. Let the words the mean person says roll off, don't let them stick on you. There is no sense arguing with a foolish, mean person.  It's better to be silent, at first and think about the proper way to handle the situation. It's a wise person that that holds their tongue and overlooks an offense.  If you are emotionally charged, it's helpful to discuss the situation with a person who is not emotionally involved.   If you react to the mean person, it can make things worse!  They will think they are wise in their own eyes by getting you to react to their words.  Silence is powerful.

3.  Put up Healthy Boundaries.  We cannot control what anyone says or does, however we can control what we will and won't put up with in our daily life.  Make a decision in advance of how you want to handle mean people for the next time.  You have lots of choices, ignore them, stay away from them, or confront them gently with a sincere non-threatening approach.  Putting up healthy boundaries can be one of the best ways to deal with people, it's best to do it at the right time, when things calm down.

4.  Kindness Works.  The most practical way to deal with a mean person is too be kind. It's hard to be mean to someone who shows you nothing but kindness and compassion.   At the end of the day, you can look in the mirror and feel good about your own healthy choices.  You really don't want to replay mean words and an argument over and over in your head all day.  It's better to  be a duck, shake your ruffled feathers and enjoy another beautiful day because it is a gift!

GLUTEN -FREE PRODUCTS? What should I buy?

GLUTEN-FREE Life Style-try before you Buy!             By Laura Dellutri

Eating Gluten-Free has become a way of life for many of my friends, fans and family.  In fact, 2 million people in the US have Celiac Disease 1 in about every 133 people.  I felt compelled to address this topic in a blog because it can be a little overwhelming purchasing Gluten Free products at the grocery store.  The products can be a little expensive, and there is nothing more disappointing than buying an item, and not liking the taste of a Gluten-Free product.

This month I was working on a Segment for TV and I stumbled across a company named, Taste Guru.  They ship you a box of Gluten-Free products to try every month for as little as $25.  They sent me a box to review for my blog and I was totally impressed with the contents. The box content value was well over $25.   Here is a picture of a monthly box!

There is Gluten-Free Pasta, Quinoa, Rosemary Truffle popcorn, Soy joy, Fruit trail mix, Chocolate and even Smores bars.  I am giving www.tasteguru.com a thumbs up! It's a great way to sample Gluten Free items at a nominal cost,

Savings Savvy Sista by Laura Dellutri

If there is one thing you can call me it’s a Savings Savvy Sister!  I love a good deal and all the bragging rights that go with it.  Brag to your friends about all your great deals and save money for the activities you’d rather spend your hard-earned money on, simply by following my Savvy Sista tips!

1.     Your Go-To App!   A Savvy Sista knows how to seek out a good deal …whether you need a manicure, a good house cleaning, or a new garage door, the deal is out there.  It’s up to you to do the research by being a savvy shopper.  I start first with my ValPak phone app and check out the deals in my zip code then I choose two or three deals that pertain to what I need.

2.      Coupon Power   The power is in the coupon, but it’s up to you to be extra savvy.  Check expiration dates, look at days of the week, hours and restrictions.  You don’t want to show up somewhere and the deal is over or not honored.  This could turn your deal smile into a frown.

3.     Start a file System-   When I receive coupons in the mail for dry cleaning, hair- cuts nails and other personal services I put those in my purse in a plastic bag with coupons I save for Macy’s, Bed Bath etc… For bigger Spring Cleaning, Home Maintenance jobs I call in the professionals.  Those coupon deals go into a file system that I email to myself.

4.     Share The Love on Line!  When I garage sale, or use a department store 30% off coupon on a 65% off clearance rack  or get a great discount with my ValPak coupons I experience a  “cheap” thrill.  Honestly, it’s not being cheap, it’s being savvy with the money I spend and there is a thrill of getting the best deal. When I see a deal on my ValPak coupons, I share the love. I text my girlfriends, Facebook or tweet about it with a photo of the deal and brag a little on the next girl’s shopping trip.  My neighbor and I send pics of what we purchased and “ooh” and ahh over the deals.  Being a Savvy Sister is fun and fulfilling, so get started shopping!

LIFE COACHING- HOW TO HAVE A DATE NIGHT WITH KIDS! TAKE YOUR KIDS ON A DATE!

A Date night with your significant other can seem next to impossible when you have children. What's a parent to do?  Take your kids on a date night!  It's probably less expensive than the $10 an hour babysitting fees, and you get special time, carved out for you and them.

It's great to create memories with your family that will last a life time.    Date Nights with your children individually or as a family can change future generations to come.  The special things you do with your children will be repeated with their children and then your great grandchildren.  Get creative and enjoy the dates, they will put a smile on your face and theirs!

It's fun putting a tie on your little guy and taking him out to your favorite restaurant!   It's also a perfect time to teach them proper manners at a fine eating establishment.  A kid's date night should be fun and well planned.  Remember it's up to  you to teach them how to behave in public at a restaurant, bowling alley, sporting event, pumpkin patch and ice rink.. I found these on Pinterest.

From that favorite “childhood” pizza place  to that special game at the local high school, you can’t afford not partake in the little things that bring a smile to your children’s faces. You can save money by leveraging local entertainment and food deals to make it a part of your monthly budget.  You can use the Valpak.com mobile app or Groupon.com can offer special discounted rates that will help save you in some cases up to 50%.

There are also plenty of FREE things to do with your children on a date night!
...
3 QUICK TIPS
  1. PLAN THE DATE NIGHT If it’s once a week or once a month to give the children something special to look forward to.
  2. TRY NEW THINGS! If you always go skating don’t be afraid to go for LAZER tag, skating rink or a new museum.
3. GO ON LINE FOR COUPONS Be a savvy parent and teach your children money doesn’t grow on trees!  It's best to let them help you find the deals, days of the week for discounts etc.

Renewed and Re-Motivate

If you fell off the fitness wagon shortly after New Year’s, not to worry. Beach season is still a few months away. Shed a few pounds and learn how an active body keeps the stress away. I like to give myself a Mini-Spring makeover to get me Summer-beach ready, so I can feel confident and good about myself.

  1. Energize with Exercise! It doesn’t matter if you start a Zumba class, join a fitness center or start walking 3 miles a day. What does matter is you will look great and feel energized with a new work-out routine. Don’t have time? Wake up an hour earlier, you will be glad you did. Look for great fitness coupons for classes in your ValPak mailer.
  2. 30 days of Healthy Eating You can do anything for 30 days! It’s not forever. Eating healthy is easy if you meal plan the month, pack low calorie snacks and NEVER be hungry. Eating low calorie 6 times a day will stave off hunger and the results with exercise can make you feel great when you look in the mirror. Check out ValPak businesses that offer the nutritional 30 day meal plan, to help you stay on track.
  3. Flaunt your Assets Instead of focusing on what’s wrong with you, focus on what’s right! Do you have pretty eyes? Accentuate them with a new style of eye make-up or mascara that makes your eyes stand out. Is your hair long, thick or a beautiful color? Try a new hair style that showcases your hair or add a new color! Is your smile gorgeous? Try a new lip liner and lip stain to accent them.
  4. Get the Summer Glow Are you self -conscious about “white legs” or “cellulite”? Stop stressing and start camouflaging. Tanned bodies look smoother, sleeker and beach ready. Let’s face it, a little fat always looks better tanned. Spray tans, self-tan creams and tanning beds offer solutions to imperfections. You can try a variety of tan options and get a great savings by checking out ValPak coupons in your zip code.
